Abstract

"According to the German Job Vacancy Survey, most establishments are concerned by digitalisation. We find no effect on the number of employees, but digitalisation partly increases the dynamics of hires and separations. Furthermore, requirements for new employees are raised, above all regarding competences from further training as well as communication and social skills. New hires in companies with digitalisation trend are faced with higher requirements on working time and content flexibility. Although in the course of digitalisation some bottlenecks in the filling vacancies occur and the requirements rise, we find no noticeable wage effects. Legal regulations must continue protecting employees from overload, but should also allow individual solutions. This could be done by the principle that concessions of the employees have to be compensated by the employers, for example regarding vacation or health management."
