L’approvisionnement continu en eau, décisif contre le choléra

Abstract

Environ 2,4 milliards de cas de maladies diarrhéiques ont été recensés en 2015 dans le monde. Elles causent près de 500 000 morts parmi les enfants de moins de cinq ans. Plus de 60 % de ces décès sont attribués à un accès défaillant à l’eau et à l’assainissement. Le choléra est une maladie diarrhéique aiguë qui, sans traitement, peut mener à la mort en quelques heures. Chaque année, 1,3 à 4 millions de cas et 95 000 morts – dont la moitié parmi les moins de cinq ans – seraient dus au choléra. En Afrique subsaharienne, plus de la moitié des cas sont recensés dans des hotspots qui représentent moins de 4 % de la population de la zone. Les efforts coordonnés par la Global Task Force on Cholera Control (GTFCC) visent en priorité ces foyers endémiques.
