Abstract

IN 2002, BUCKLEY ARGUED THAT past IB research has succeeded because it focused on three big research questions: (1) How to explain the flows of foreign direct investment (FDI), (2) How to explain the existence, strategy, and organization of multinational enterprises (MNEs), and (3) How to understand and predict the internationalization of firms and the new developments of globalization (Buckley, 2002: p. 365). He concluded that “the IB research agenda is stalled because no such big question has currently been identified” (Buckley, 2002: p. 370). Buckley & Ghauri (2004) elaborated on the question of globalization as a possible next big question for IB research. Peng (2004) argued that the next big question should be “What determines the international success and failure of firms around the globe?” Perhaps another big question is the ways and means nation-states can cooperate to create a global regime…
