Abstract

Taiwan is an island country located on the western side of the Pacific Ocean. Its ports such as Keelung, Taichung, and Kaohsiung play an important role in the ocean shipping market. To enhance the competitive edge in the market, the management system of Taiwan’s commercial ports was transformed from a state-owned system to a system that separates administration and business in 2012. Meanwhile, there are long-term plans for the construction of international commercial ports and their integration with the international environment. This chapter introduces the international commercial ports of Taiwan from the perspectives of history, location, cargo types, and operational performance. Additionally, important issues of port management in Taiwan are analyzed, such as the formulation of port management regulations, port planning procedures, and the process of convergence with international shipping regulations, as well as the possibility of cooperation between ports in Taiwan and the international community in the future.
