Abstract

En los últimos treinta años ninguna variable ha sufrido tantos cambios cuantitativos y cualitativos como la población de Venezuela. La década de los años cincuenta y la década de los años ochenta representan a dos venezuelas totalmente diferentes. La primera es una década emparentada con el siglo pasado y la segunda, representa por adelantado a la Venezuela que se apresta a recibir el próximo siglo. Siempre hemos tenido problemas, los seguimos teniendo, pero la magnitud y el tratamiento de los mismos son también totalmente diferentes. La población de Venezuela bajo el régimen democrático ha cambiado radicalmente: se nace, se vive y se muere de manera diferente. Nuestros indicadores demográficos manifiestan que el país ha avanzado y se ha transformado a partir de la segunda mitad del presente siglo. El censo de 1950, realizado bajo la dictadura de Pérez Jiménez y el último censo de población levantado en 1981 bajo el gobierno democrático de Herrera Campins nos servirán para comparar las dos Venezuelas a las que hemos hecho referencia.
