Abstract

The ability to absorb new development from foreign technology through foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow plays an important role in determining the relationship between FDI, knowledge spillover, and knowledge creation. This study hypothesized that the absorptive capacity to knowledge spillover between country may vary condition to the level of human capital, and research and development (R&D). Countries that have lower levels of human capital and R&D may not have the same absorptive capacity as compared to countries that have high levels of human capital and R&D. The main focus of this study is to examine the non-monotonicity relationship between knowledge spillover, human capital and R&D. Applying threshold regression techniques proposed by Hansen (2000) for cross-sectional data from 1995 to 2014 for 190 countries, the study finds non-monotonic effects of human capital, and the R&D to knowledge creation. Only above the threshold levels of human capital and R&D, FDI has a positive impact on knowledge creation. Furthermore, this ability will be even better if the country has a better English proficiency.
