Abstract

In this article the effect of external trade on the performance of French industries is studied. Performance is characterized in terms of "efficiency variables". An enlarged model has been used to explain these efficiency variables in terms of different aspects of the competitive environment. This model is first tested at the level of the industries as a whole and then applied to different sub-sectors classified according to a technological criterion. The results clearly show the specificity of the technological characteristics and reveal a relationship between performance and the involvement in external trade. This relationship is positive within the fast-growing sector and negative within mature sectors.
