Productividad del trabajo en la industria maquiladora del norte de Mexico: Un analisis de convergencia

Abstract

En este estudio se analiza la productividad del trabajo en la industria maquiladora de exportacion por divisiones y por estados, comparando la region de la frontera norte de Mexico con el resto de los estados. Se utiliza un analisis econometrico de panel, partiendo del enfoque de convergencia condicional. Se aprecia una heterogeneidad de la productividad del trabajo, lo que sugiere diferencias regionales en los procesos tecnologicos y en la dotacion del capital. Los estados del centro mostraron una productividad del trabajo superior a la de la frontera norte. No obstante, el valor agregado originado en los estados con mayor productividad laboral fue menor comparado con los estados de la frontera norte. Los calculos econometricos mostraron divergencia en la productividad, sin que se presentaran evidencias estadisticas del impacto de la fuerza de trabajo con mayor calificacion. Al incluir las variables del crecimiento del capital fisico y los salarios reales, los resultados muestran que la productividad del trabajo exhibe una debil tendencia a converger. El coeficiente de los efectos fijos para los estados de Nuevo Leon, Baja California y Chihuahua, indica la existencia de condiciones locales para el crecimiento de la productividad del trabajo.
