Engagement régional des universités : éviter la confusion, malgré d'inéluctables contradictions

Abstract

Cet article révèle que du fait de sa condition même, l’université doit, pour l’heure, s’accommoder d’une incompatibilité profonde entre son identité et sa vocation, et s’acquitter tant bien que mal d’une mission dont la portée est pourtant colossale. Cette tension est souvent masquée, fort heureusement peut-être, par la confusion des termes employés pour analyser le rôle de l’université, et par les incertitudes concernant la meilleure façon de présenter ce rôle. Nous ne tarderons pas à nous apercevoir que cette problématique est essentielle tant pour la gouvernance et la gestion de chaque établissement que pour les politiques publiques menées dans le domaine de l’enseignement supérieur de masse, envisagé alors comme un système, notamment du point de vue de sa diversité.
