Abstract

El desempeño de la agroindustria azucarera en México se ha caracterizado por la presencia de crisis recurrentes y una intervención estatal pronunciada. Esta actividad es muy antigua y ha requerido cientos de años para consolidarse. Desde inicios del siglo xx esta agroindustria experimenta problemas de financiamiento, sobreproducción, disminuciones de precios, políticas de apertura indiscriminada y falta de protección que están entorpeciendo el desarrollo equilibrado de esta agroindustria y su competitividad. Este trabajo presenta una caracterización del sector azucarero en el país y aborda algunos factores que están limitando su competitividad. /Mexican agroindustrial sugar sector performance is signed by frequent crisis and by a strong governmental intervention. This industrial activity is very ancient and its consolidation has taken hundred of years. From the beginning of the twenty century this agroindustry has been affected by several problems as financing, overstocking, prices decrease, indiscriminated opening and lack of protection, situation that obstruct an equilibrium path in its development and its competitiveness. This paper offers, characterization of sugar sector in Mexico and deals with some factors that impede its competitiveness.
