Abstract

Social entrepreneurship focuses on building social value, using innovative approaches to tackle global problems. This article presents guidelines for an international development course taught by the author during the spring of 2014. The article discusses course objectives, structure, readings, assignments, assessment tools, the role of student choice, and the inherent challenges in developing and teaching a lower-level course on development for a social entrepreneurship major. It also includes the syllabus. The author concludes that active learning strategies and a focus on development problem-solving encourage both engagement and skill-building among student 'changemakers'.
