Status and probable direction of circular economy in the construction industry in India through a systematic literature review

Abstract

The global construction industry (CI) primarily adopted the linear development model, which resulted in almost 30% of the extraction of natural resources and 25% of total solid waste generated. In India, nearly 100 million tons of construction waste is generated annually, and the consumption of natural resources is almost 28%. The circular economy (CE) model has gained attention with the growing population and increasing demand. This article highlights the recent developments in a CE model in the CI through a systematic literature review (SLR) that includes 95 papers divided into four aspects: CE in the CI, CE and construction and demolition waste management, circular building design tool, and CE in the CI through building materials. The article further highlights the status of CE initiatives in the CI in India. Finally, a gap analysis of each aspect covered in the global literature with CE initiatives in the CI in India is conducted.
