O uso indevido do Cerrado brasileiro reduz as chances de uma agricultura sustentável

Abstract

Considerado o segundo maior bioma nacional, o Cerrado ocupa cerca de um quarto do território brasileiro. É descrito como a mais diversificada savana do mundo, devido a sua grande biodiversidade, e também, a mais ameaçada, visto que já perdeu mais de 50% de sua cobertura original. A ação da agricultura e pecuária tem modificado intensamente as paisagens, provocando imensurável perda de biodiversidade, visto que muitos organismos apresentam elevado grau de endemismo e dependência na manutenção da heterogeneidade espacial do bioma. A manutenção de áreas naturais pode abrigar variedade de organismos benéficos e essenciais ao meio ambiente e também as culturas plantadas, como polinizadores e inimigos naturais de pragas agrícolas. Em tempos atuais, frente ao desenvolvimento da biotecnologia, a conservação da biodiversidade torna-se cada vez mais necessária, principalmente sob a luz do desenvolvimento sustentável.
