Abstract

Over time, the concept of food security has evolved and at the same time become more precise. From an initial concern over national or world supply, attention is now focused on access to food. The concept is analyzed as a problematic combination between supply and demand, be it from the point of view of the quality of the production, as in determining the effective demand of food. Hunger and food in security are both a result and a cause of poverty and, therefore, eliminating hunger is not only a moral and social imperative but is also a good investment for economic growth, especially for the poorer countries. In this respect, trade and biotechnology applied to agriculture seems to be indispensable to eradicate poverty and hunger. Nevertheless, many questions remain requesting answers. Hence the impact of the trade liberation and the contribution of the agricultural biotechnology on the food safety of the countries, especially of developing countries is discussed. We finalize this paper with a proposes programme for family agriculture aimed at improving the competitiveness and the effectiveness of policy interventions. It is thought it may cope better with the challenges that lie ahead.// El concepto de seguridad alimentaria ha ido evolucionando y precisándose a la vez.
