Abstract

The optimal regulation of nonpoint source pollution has received a lot of attention in the economic literature during the last fifteen years. Nevertheless, there is still no consensus as to what instruments of regulation are the most appropriate. Within this context, the article aims to reflect and compare the main contributions of the different existing approaches. At the same time, the article presents a general model, which serves as a point of reference for the discussion and evaluation of the different environmental policies. Additionally, the most outstanding tendencies of the recent research are presented – the incorporation of the aspect of space and the reduction of the problems related with asymmetric information. To deal with the problem of asymmetric information we propose to implement and analyze a deposit-refund system.
