Abstract

This study estimates the level of vulnerability of agricultural production in Mexico in case of the occurrence of systemic adverse natural factors. It uses information of 148 crops which together account for over ninety percent of the area planted in the spring – summer cycle. Based on loss severity levels presented in each of the years of 1980-2011, financial beta is estimated for each of the crops that belong to this portfolio. The most sensitive crops to the occurrence of adverse systemic factors such as "El Niño" are identified using this financial measure. Also, betas of all crops are compared with the current insurance market premiums against natural catastrophes to identify those prices may be subject to revision
