Abstract

Many studies have examined the factors responsible for the nexus between economic growth and natural resources. However, the role of higher education, business freedom and globalization towards resource-reliance remain unexplored. Considering this gap, this study examines whether higher education attainment discards the resource-curse paradox among South Asian economies from 2001 to 2020. Moreover, the method of moments quantile regression (MMQR) is applied, which reveals that higher education and business freedom reduce the resource dependence across all levels of quantiles 0.25th to 0.90th); however, the magnitude of the coefficients substantially vary across at lower and higher levels of resource dependency. The results state that globalization helps reduce dependency only under higher quantiles (0.75th and 0.90th). The findings confirm a significant moderating effect of business freedom and globalization on the relationship between higher education and resource rent. Finally, the effect of economic growth on the natural resource rent is negative (positive) under lower and medium (higher) order quantiles.
