•What creativity is in a state of dissensus in the current literature.•Creativity is a complex concept that loses meaning when over-simplified.•Creativity is existentially connected to uncertainty and entrepreneurship.•Creativity's most appropriate level of analysis lies with the specific problem.•Harvey and Berry's (2022) theorizing on creativity neglects several key issues.
