Abstract

This paper analyzes the intergenerational educational mobility in Colombia from 1929 to mid 1990s. By means of a new index, measures the ascending intergenerational mobility, understood as the net probability that children surpass their parents' education. The incidence of education returns on educational decisions and intergenerational mobility, is analyzed with a new series of education returns that covers the same years that the index of mobility. The analysis shows a significant increase of education between generations and that the intergenerational mobility slowed in the mid 1970s. This could be explained by, among other factors, the reduction in the returns of education. Finally, it suggests the presence of market imperfections for financing college.
