Abstract

This paper studies the high levels of trade credit accounts due to the long payment delays practiced by French firms. On the basis of a panel of industrial and commercial firms from the Lorraine region, observed between 1998 and 2006, we provide information to better understand the mechanisms underlying the most important form of short-term financing for French firms. The most relevant results from the related financial theories are tested by applying statistical and econometric methods. They demonstrate the predominance of financial considerations, notably those concerning the availability of bank credit when it comes to explain trade credit behaviors.
