[Documento] La actividad comercial y el grupo de comerciantes de Cartagena a fines del siglo XIX

Abstract

En este trabajo se muestra cómo, a pesar del declive económico de Cartagena durante el siglo XIX, el comercio jugó un papel preponderante y permitió a los comerciantes convertirse en la élite local. Se describen las principales actividades económicas de la ciudad y se presentan los perfiles de algunos de los comerciantes más significativos, incluyendo resenas de los negocios particulares a que se dedicaron y el éxito o fracaso que tuvieron. Se concluye que el comercio fue una verdadera escuela empresarial que le permitió a este grupo desarrollar notables habilidades de organización y diversificación.
