Abstract

There has recently been growing interest for the introduction of environmental objectives in microfinance. Similarly to the social impact of microfinance, it is necessary to examine how these objectives are taken into account in practice and how they are implemented on the ground. This article analyzes these challenges by using a case study of a specific ?green microfinance? project and its interaction with local development channels around a natural preserve in Nicaragua. It shows that the individualist logic of microfinance and the promotion of change based on economic incentives do not allow sufficiently considering the complex interactions with the overall dynamics of development. Tackling poverty reduction and environmental issues requires a deeper commitment through policies supporting certain development channels.
