Abstract

We propose a spatial analysis of the take-up to social assistance benefit. We use an original survey about unknowing and un-claiming of local allowances in a representative sample of Revenu de Solidarité Active (RSA) recipients in the Seine et Marne department. This paper studies why people don?t obtain a free access to public transportation, isolating unknowing and un-claiming. It measures spatial dependency both on the knowledge and on the claim of the benefit and tests different hypotheses which can explain this spatial correlation. We find that benefit take-up decreases when people live farther away from public transportation. We suggest also network effects on the knowledge of the assistance mechanism.
