Comparative Analysis of Socio-Economical Development of Northern Regions of Poland

Abstract

Spatial diversification of the development becomes the basic problem of the contemporary economy. Regional development is a multidimensional category, hence its composite identification is a complex and multiple question. The evaluation of the inter- and intra-regional diversification derives from the spheres of the regional development. The spatial diversification of the development has a number of economical, political and cultural sources. The study comprised two provinces located in the north-west (Western Pomerania) and the north-east (Ermland-Masuria) of Poland. To achieve this goal, selected measures of the economical development were used. A comparison of their values was accomplished. The participation of the GDP of the provinces in the GDP of Poland in 2002 amounted to 4.51% in West Pomerania and 2.95% in Ermland-Masuria. In 2005 the shares dropped in West Pomerania to 4.12%, and in Ermland-Masuria to 2.86% and remained at that level in 2008. Assuming the GDP as a measure of the wealth of the region, West Pomerania can be considered wealthier than Ermland-Masuria. The analyzed provinces achieved significantly even values of the Florence specialization indexes, above the unit by the majority. The direct comparisons of the particular measures of the regional development have so far indicated the supremacy of West Pomerania. One of the measures comprising jointly the above measures is the Perkal synthetic index of the level of the regional development. The obtained values were close to zero. This denotes that both provinces belong to medium developed regions and within the period 2002-2008 they remained at the same medium level.
