This paper proposes a definition of structural unemployment based on its effect on the rate of job hirings. The paper compares this with other possible definitions and examines the relationship betwe en structural unemployment and shifts in the u/v curve. The main resu lts for the British economy are that, while there has undoubtedly bee n an increase in industrial mismatch in recent years, there has been no corresponding increase in regional imbalance. Evidence on other co untries also casts doubt on the idea that increased structural mismat ch has been a major cause of the growth in unemployment. Copyright 1987 by Blackwell Publishing Ltd
