Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of geographical location on farm exit. With this objective, panel data from the Farm Structure Survey of Navarra are used. Although the data is local, conclusions drawn from this study may be useful as an orientation to understand this problem in other zones, given the wide agricultural diversity in this region. A hierarchical probit model of random parameters is used, which implies an analytical, and consequently thematic, innovative approach. Results show that both location and the socio-economic context of the municipality and town are significant factors that modify the probability of long-term maintenance of the farms. The highest probability of farm exit is found both in zones with high activity rates in the building sector. The model also shows the positive impact of the development of local agro-industry on farms subsitence. Additionally, econometric results suggest that the stability of part-time agriculture and small farms varies locally.
