Abstract

Despite being the richest continent, by volume and value of natural resources, Africa remains the poorest in almost all beneficial economic indicators. The combined GDP of the continent is estimated to be around USD 3.1 trillion compared to USD 18.1 trillion for China and USD 26.85 trillion for the USA. Ironically, both USA and China depend, significantly, on Africa’s natural resources to increase and strengthen their GDP values. For more than 400 years, many countries European countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Netherland, and Belgium, plundered Africa’s natural and human resources to sustain their economies. These actions were the consequence of European colonisation of Africa which started with the enslavement of Africans and the eventual partition of Africa after the Berlin conference of 1884-1885.
