Income and Poverty Implications of Covid-19 Pandemic and Coping Strategies: The Case of South Africa

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the income and poverty implications of COVID-19 and the coping strategies used to minimize the shock in South Africa. The findings reveal that the outbreak of COVID-19 has significantly reduced income and increased poverty level. Furthermore, the study identifies crises scoping strategies such as reduction in spending, access to savings to fill up the income gap due to the COVID-19, relying on extended family members and relief from unemployment insurance fund (UIF) and government initiatives. The coping strategies reveal the options available as reference for management of future crises, the level of resilience, and the proportion of the most vulnerable with no option for policy consideration. By implication, policy measures need to give more attention to the most vulnerable (those without coping strategies) and strengthen the support base to minimise the adverse impact of the pandemic.
