Abstract

In a world of acceleration, where the urban experience is mediated through, and lived as, perpetual mobility, what does travel writing mean for cities? As the consumers’ worlds of reading possibilities open across dizzying, overwhelming panoramas of seductive cities and distant, mediated sensations, are the spaces of writers’ worlds transformed as well, with ever more cosmopolitan connection and restless identities of place? In this piece, Flusty presents a sampling of scenes from an emergent world urban system five centuries under construction and counting, shaped by the ruthless competition among cities to become the next destination, the next Great City.
