Abstract

This paper uses information from two rural household databases to help inform the issue of poverty and growth prospects in the rural sector in Mozambique. Specifically, it focuses on 1) the concentration of two specific types of household assets in the rural sector: land and cashew trees, 2) the impact of this concentration on household income and calorie intake, and 3) the implications of the findings for possible engines of growth in the rural sector. The paper is not intended to exhaust the issue of rural poverty and growth prospects, but to add some important contributions to on-going debates about growth strategies.
