Abstract
Small enterprises are an important source of employment in European economies. Frequently first step to create a firm is self-employment and policies fostering this kind of employment are common. In this paper, an evaluation of a Spanish self-employment scheme is done focusing in its job creation effects. Results show that almost fifty per cent of the analysed individuals have hired at least one employee. People with previous work experience have a higher probability of hiring as well as those with short spells of unemployment before entering self-employment. Interesting differences are found between men and women with respect to the characteristics of their business and related to the determinants of job creation.
